Prairie Parkway might be closer to funds

GENEVA -- Could the contentious Prairie Parkway proposal be one step closer to receiving federal funding?

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration announced in the Sept. 10 Federal Register that an environmental impact statement will be prepared for the proposed project.

The Federal Register shows that the statement would "evaluate potential transportation improvement alternatives" to service north-south travel between Interstates 88 and 80. The study area includes townships in Kane County south of Route 64.

One of the alternatives could be the proposed parkway, which basically would be an interstate-type highway. The possibility of such a road being built in the next decade has caused concern among anti-sprawl activists.

Completion of the environmental study is needed to secure federal funding. The revelation that the study is even taking place also has sparked concern among opponents.

The notice in the Federal Register also shows that a meeting concerning the environmental statement is scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 13 at the Illinois Department of Transportation office, 700 E. Norris Drive, Ottawa.
