One of the most contentious local issues of the past few years has been
the proposed Prairie Parkway, a highway that would connect Interstates
80 and 88 and cut through much farmland and properties.
Some people have said the highway was needed for the future traffic
needs. Others have called into question a future that would benefit
commuters over farmers and new growth over old.
Either way, the face of Kane County could change, with what has been
compared to Interstate 355 cutting through what now is farms, homes,
forests and wetlands. One group wants to document what that change
would take away.
The deadline for the “What We’d Lose with the Prairie
Parkway” digital photo contest has been extended to Oct. 6. The
contest is being sponsored by Citizens Against the Sprawlway, an
anti-Parkway group. Photographers have a double incentive of the awards
and recording the environmental and community values that are prized in
Kane, Kendall and Grundy counties.
The contest is open to all photographers – amateur, professional,
and student. Prizes total $900 – $300 for the overall grand prize
and $150 in each of four categories.
The three adult categories are agriculture, rural, small-town life, and
environment with a special youth category for photographers 16 and
younger. The images should be of subjects within 5 miles of the
proposed Prairie Parkway.
