Daniel Frank MacGilvray 1944-1998

Daniel F. MacGilvray, 54, of College Station, Texas, former area resident, died Wednesday (Sept. 30, 1998) in Bryan, Texas.  Burial in Mound Grove Cemetery in Kankakee.

He was born Sept. 13, 1944 in Kankakee, the son of George and Gretchen MacGilvray, who reside in St. Anne.
He was a professor in the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University, where he also served as associate dean and assistant dean.

He was the recipient of the TAMU Former Student Distinguished Teaching Award in 1993, the Amoco Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1994 and was one of three recipients of the American Institute of Architects Education Honor Awards for 1990.

He formed and led the TAMU College of Architecture's first study abroad program in 1979, and remained instrumental in the foreign studies program throughout his career at the University, returning to teach in 1982, 1990 and 1995. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Texas Society of Architects and was named President of the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.

From 1975-77, he was Courts Project Administrator at the National Clearinghouse for Criminal Justice Planning and Architecture at the University of Illinois. He specialized in the planning of court systems and facilities. He served on the Planning and Zoning Commission of College Station from 1983-87; on the board of trustees for the College Station ISD from 1987-1996 where he served as vice-president and president.

He had served as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. MacGilvray received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Champaign.

He was a member of the A&M United Methodist Church.

Along with his parents, survivors include two sons and a daughter-in- law: Eric and Karen MacGilvray and Brian MacGilvray, all of Chicago; a daughter, Katherine MacGilvray of Champaign; four brothers, G. Michael MacGilvray and David MacGilvray, both of Atlanta, Ga., Joseph MacGilvray of Orlando, Fla. and Thomas MacGilvray of Bourbonnais; and five nephews and a niece.
